Text Ticker: Blogger.com Banned In Turkey

Apparently more censorship in Turkey via Harun Yahya. A few days after I met him in Istanbul earlier this month, I got a press release from one of his associates, which included the following:

Democracy is not freedom of behaviour. Democracy teaches us not to display patience in the face of insult but to avoid from it. We do not want a society enjoying freedom of insult. We miss a model of society respecting and observing the rights of one another. Let no one miss and target a society enjoying freedom of insult. Let people miss and target a model of society in which love, respect and kindness abounds.

What can we say? He is right…

Certainly, who could disagree with these words! I wouldn’t, however, say that banning websites is the answer. Particularly ones that, like the page that got RichardDawkins.net banned in Turkey, raise valid criticisms amidst their disrespectful insults. While Oktar continually challenges Dawkins to a debate, perhaps knowing already that Dawkins makes a policy of not debating creationists in public, he has not explained or retracted the mistakes in The Atlas of Creation that Dawkins points to. That being the case, I am a bit skeptical about the content of his “love, respect and kindness.” But I’m open to being corrected.
