Text Ticker: Born creationists

Salman over at Science and Religion News has a post about the latest work of cognitive scientist Justin Barrett, who is arguing that creationism/intelligent design is a more innate disposition than naturalism.

AC Grayling has a scathing, though measured, response:

His real reasons for thinking this, of course, are that he is a man of faith funded by a faith-based organisation; but the reasons he professed were that children have an innate tendency when small to interpret what happens in the world to be the outcome of purposive agency.

Now on this point he and I, an atheist funded by no organisation keen on promoting atheism, agree.

Grayling is a bit unfair to Barrett, who, (despite? being a theist) has done some of the most important work in the cognitive science of religion. But Grayling does go on to raise worthwhile questions about taking money from the tricky Templeton Foundation. [go!]
