Text Ticker: Two op-eds, two tales on torture

I'm in Washington this week to take part in Witness against Torture's campaign to close the Guantanamo prison. Upon arrival, I found two very different op-eds on the issue. The Washington Post has Senator Mitch McConnell declaring,

one European official who visited in 2006 called Guantanamo "a model" prison and better than the ones in Belgium. On my visit, the first detainee I came across was riding a stationary bicycle. This is not Abu Ghraib.

He goes on to argue that closing the prison is a mistake. In the Times, however, we see a 2006 Red Cross report from Gitmo:

Beginning with the chapter headings on its contents page — “suffocation by water,” “prolonged stress standing,” “beatings by use of a collar,” “confinement in a box” — the document makes compelling and chilling reading.

Shut it down. [go!]
