Text Ticker: The animal welfare mainstream

The same day I wrote about Matthew Scully‘s (albiet 6 year old) book, Nicholas Kristof has a NYT op-ed about animal rights. It refers to last year’s passage of a ballot initiative in California that gives farmed animals a bit more wiggle room, and dwells on good ol’ Peter Singer. He also rightly points out that in many ways the modern approach to animal welfare is unprecedented.

These are vexing questions, and different people will answer them differently. For my part, I eat meat, but I would prefer that this practice not inflict gratuitous suffering.

Yet however we may answer these questions, there is one profound difference from past centuries: animal rights are now firmly on the mainstream ethical agenda.
