Question: what do people mean when they talk about theological "research"? Can one research theology?

I guess that's the whole issue of how inspiration/Revelation relates to "fallen" common, historical knowledge, right? For me, all theology is to whatever extent approximate by definition, if viewed in relation to an experiential sense of divinity (even if the theology, as discourse, were written-out word-for-word by the Christ Himself). So in that sense one can't but research theology, if one wants to relate to other periods or traditions, but the inspiration to do so has to either already be there or come from elsewhere, right? So maybe it's not a question of research per se but of better or worse inspiration that makes use of research (or not) in better or worse ways...
