The Near and Faraway12/07/2005 14:49:02Following the discussion of aesthetic theology, I have been thinking more about how one relates to the other traditions (the faraway). And how, too, if one has one's own tradition (the near), that ties in in turn. For instance. There are times when the faraway feels necessary to make the near feel fresh. I remember the thrill of first discovering commonalities, especially in the talk of the mystics, between Christianity and eastern traditions. Really through that, for the first time, did tired, old, (I thought) familiar Christianity begin to come alive for me. And then sometimes the near makes understanding the faraway possible, creates a context for parsing it. And then there is the problem of wrong conflation. Zooey talks about this in salinger's Franny and Zooey. That Franny had started conflating Jesus and Buddha and everyone else into one and in the process she had lost the peculiarity and person of actual Jesus. Clearly this is just a humble tiny thing and I have to go to class anyway. But categories to think in. Also don't forget while doing all this thinking to love God and souls boldly and with your heart, and to listen to that love. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - |
