The Row Boat"Had we but world enough, and time..." * Natural Law2/21/2005 00:52:34I suppose to get the new generation started should be an easy thing, nonchalant. At the very least, grace. Today I stayed home instead of going to New York to see the saffron cloths spread throughout the park. I finished a few things, including finishing touches on the little choo-choo engine that runs this site. It is a piece of Perl code called Little Logger. I also read myself into the ground, tossing theories about Pascal's Wager. My suspicion is that the Wager is often dismissed too easily. William James, for example, insists that it can only be intended as a last life-preserver to the unrepentant. Perhaps Pascal himself even thought this. But the idea, the sensation rather, of a Truth that pervades regardless of the choice... a Great Net beneath our fall as I have imagined it... this seems instead quite essential, even to the most developed sense of faith which James wants to attribute Pascal. There is also the notion in Christian imagery itself that the lost sheep returned be celebrated. Should it not be the theology of the lost sheep which lies at the true source of the Christian life, that shoddy, tricky proof which one concocts to bring the estranged home? In any event, what about those tall buildings of the city? The art, people parading, a moment of celebration for what? Nothing, which is enough for thousands of napoleonic arcs shrouded in legionary flags. Tonight I heard a wonderful concert. A friend's voice transfigured. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
