Suffering as a Source

6/22/2005 12:32:51

The contemporary liberal religious discourse, lulled by the affluence of its proponents, sometimes finds itself tempted to see religion as merely a facet of "health," and religious practice as a good, polite feature of the balanced human being. The conversion of a person in dire straits, then, seems to lack the legitimacy that might be had if the convert were more rational about the whole thing (a la C.S. Lewis?). All this even while siding with Kierkegaard against the tepid Sunday churchgoers, hypocrisy, and religion usurped by powers. Yet the story of the Buddha especially points out what can be found in other traditions as well and perhaps human experience itself.

It is something to keep in mind, and to recall in reflections on our own experience. Perhaps the very fact and nature of faith is born in human pain, not decision.
