The Benefits of Education

8/05/2006 01:49:03

The Washington Post reported last week that Arlington, VA, where I was born and raised, has the best-educated population of anyplace in the whole country. How brilliant! What can we attribute this wonderful thing to? There are no major university campuses. Well, the government's nearby, hopefully we have smart people there. But here's the article's first answer:

"It's the location and the businesses we're in -- starting with government," said Arlington County Board Chairman Chris Zimmerman (D), adding that Arlington has attracted highly educated residents since the Department of Defense established itself there in the 1940s.

"The Pentagon is the biggest office in the world, and a lot of those office workers have . . . a lot of technical skills," he said.

Considering the clear connection that we see in the world today between the country's vast overexpenditure on weapons and the senseless conflicts we promote, it is disappointing to see that all these people who know enough to know better don't.

But in fact according to Mr. Zimmerman it makes perfect sense. A lot of change needs to be made in this world, my friends!
