Writing Science Fiction8/22/2006 11:56:01Science fiction is a critical act of popular prophecy and I have been trying my hand at it a little lately. Invariably I start talking about religion in little scraps. It is fun! Every sentence asks a thousand questions when one is inventing a world. It is an overwhelming but interesting process. Here is a scrap. Delphine theology since the beginning had reserved a special respect for the silence of space. It was not one of the points of controversy in the Delphine schism from orthodox Naturalism, just a shift of emphasis that attracted Delphi and, as a result, most of its followers. The schism was more directly caused by a question of authority that (for some) drove to the core of Naturalism's foundations. Delphi was a computer built by four decorated old naturalists at the University of Beijing. All four went into hiding soon after Delphi was activated, and none could have lived long. In the summers the last few years I've been working on becoming conversant in the classics of the genre. It is hard work but what a joy! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - |
