A Gem in Salt Lake

9/17/2006 11:10:13

Yesterday on my way toward Santa Barabra I had the pleasure of passing through Salt Lake City. It is my third visit to this wonderful fantasy city and promised land. I have loved it every time. A dear friend showed me a wonderful piece of classic American religious folk art: the Gilgal Sculpture Garden. It was built as the personal project of an old Mormon stone mason and depicts icons of the faith in carved rock and assembled objects, centering on a self-portrait cast as a celebration of labor. Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood, it is not to be missed.

Afterward I went on my second Temple Square tour, led as usual by two pretty foreign girls. This time one was from Japan, the other from New Zealand. I asked if they knew of the garden and they didn't! Can you believe that missionaries would come to the United States for the first time, to the capital of their faith, and not be required to see this most honest and emblematic expression of it? I gave them my brochure.
