ASNR Conference Presentation

4/22/2007 16:12:35

This weekend I went up to Sacramento State to give what is really my first academic conference presentation. It was a wonderful experience, and I am thankful for the support of all the people up there. The event was a second annual interdisciplinary conference organized by Professors Erin Stiles and Victoria Shinbrot called "Artful Strategies and Necessary Risks: The Shifting Borders between Success and Failure."

Thrilled by the theme, I put together a revision of a paper I first wrote several years ago, "The Spectator and the Fool: Watching and Learning with Symeon of Emesa." Over the last few weeks, I've had a great time putting together this revision. In particular, reading more of the work of William Stringfellow has been a great treat. I especially recommend his The Politics of Spirituality. Thanks also to Ben T., my Stringfellow-guru. Without his Scripture Detourne publication on Stringfellow's circus, this paper would not have been possible.

Since this revision was arranged to be a talk, I figured the way to offer it here should be as an audio file of me reading it. Forgive the low quality. I tried to make it as small a file as possible, since it runs around fifteen minutes.

I listened to a bit of this talk! It's great to hear your voice. Good for you for having something written/recorded to show for your talk. I gave a talk at a bioethics conference not too long ago, also about 15 minutes, but decided to speak from my notes. Obviously pros and cons.
