Restoring Virtue to Its Feet with the Met's Satyagraha

4/28/2008 08:11:37

Time for Row Boat filmstrip #2! This is footage I shot in conjunction with my upcoming article in the May issue of the Brooklyn Rail (which will be posted in the Articles section when released).

Keep in mind this is still only my second attempt at video production ever. I still haven't entered the realm of the talkie; the narrative is carried by subtitles rather than voice.

Anyway, I've always been drawn to the silent film format, at least ever since learning that I had a great-aunt who played piano for silent films. That would be a real musical adventure: performing live to the drama on screen.

Maybe it was the awe-inspired setting, but your hand trembled a bit more in this video than the last. I also had trouble understand the story-line...

Yeah, part of it was that I didn't feel cameras were very welcome in some places. Something to be braver about!

And I made the huge mistake of not letting the subtitles run long enough to be readable. I recommend pausing to take the time to read them.

Sorry about that.

Maybe next time I'll try voice-overs. Any volunteers to be the voice?

Ahh, typo in the video! "Leapt," not "lept."

Thanks to Fr. B!

I would love if you would be the Voice, Isabelle! I can send you lines, then you can record them and send them back.

You'll hear from me on this.

Just looked at the back of the program for Satyagraha - still kicking around my house. It's an ad for the Mercedes C-Class: "It's lower, longer, wider and just plain meaner." What a bunch we are.

Loved the video.
